How to Transform Your Career Sunset into a Sunrise

The transition from your career is a time for joyful anticipation that is felt along with uncertainties about an unfamiliar, major phase of your life.

There are many questions to ponder: personal ones about yourself, family, professional matters and your practice. As you begin to consider these major concerns, it will become evident that they include a multitude of questions. They require thoughtful consideration in order for you to experience a smooth, successful outcome.

From Dreams to Reality

There are two major realities that you should be aware of and consider as you plan and prepare.

The first is to acknowledge that the transition from your career is a process, not an event. It requires thoughtful deliberation over time, as you reflect upon your needs and aspirations about personal, professional matters and practice concerns.

The second is that the practice must be prepared for your transition. These preparations are based on having a successful practice. However, this in and of itself, does not equate to being ready to present to a prospective buyer.

One major area of endeavor is to ensure that your practice is ready to accommodate another physician. Another is to develop and organize information about the practice for a prospective buyer to undertake due diligence. These are customized preparations that must be made before you even begin to market your practice. This applies whether you wish to execute a staged succession, an up-front private sale or a purchase by a financial institution such as a family office.

The next step is for me to introduce you to a prospective buyer that meets, as closely as possible, your established criteria.

My Story

I ended my plastic surgery practice years ago. As I began to prepare, I understood the need for a consultant who could guide me through the process. I looked for someone who had broad and deep expertise well beyond that of the buy–sell essentials of the transaction. I knew that the transition involved placing the ongoing care of my patients in good hands, the custody and provision to patients of medical records, avoiding potential medical legal concerns and much, much more. I wanted to create a transition that would preserve my legacy by introducing a capable younger physician to my practice and build upon it. I undertook an extensive search but could not find someone that fulfilled these criteria. Consequently, I had to do it on my own; it was extremely time consuming, stressful and took a lot longer than if I had the guidance I was looking for.

Through my difficult experience, I recognized that based on my education, credentials, experience and knowledge of practice transitions, I am able to provide uniquely beneficial consulting services to other physicians. As a plastic surgeon, I understand the joys and worries that fellow physicians experience. My career ended, but my purpose in life endures. My motivation moved me forward to guide physicians with their own transition by founding Enrique Fernandez, M. D. & Associates.

To do so in an even more comprehensive manner, I developed a team of trusted, capable professionals that provide expertise in diverse, relevant disciplines such as accounting, real estate, finance and medical legal services that complement mine. Some of these professionals have provided services for my practice as early as 1992 and in 2010-2012, assisted me in my transition.

Among my roles, I guide you to developing confidence where there may be uncertainty. When there is confusion, I lend a hand to banish it. I strive to serve your best interests as a companion navigator with you as the captain of the ship. Its direction is for you and your family to experience renewal and fulfillment in the next great phase of your life.

Two Possibilities

The single most important thing you can do to achieve the outcomes that you desire is to plan proactively in a timely manner. By doing so, you can utilize time as a tool that provides you with the flexibility to make the most of possible options that favor your success.

Conversely, uncertainty born of unfamiliarity that begets hesitation, is often a major impediment to progress. This can limit severely your options. Your devotion to your patients and desire to meet their needs daily is a reality that relegates this important project to a lesser priority.

These and other factors can make it very difficult to allocate the necessary time and effort to your transition preparations. Yet, the need to do so remains. So, what to do?

You can choose to mitigate these concerns by turning time into your ally. Be proactive and provide yourself and your staff plenty of time to create a sensible, practical transition plan that is executed in a timely manner.

You must do what will benefit you greatly: make your decision to begin. Do so with conviction.

This is the key to transforming the sunset of your career into the sunrise of the next great phase of your life.
