Critical Questions for You and Your Spouse to Consider

You have decided to begin to prepare for your End of Career and have probably asked yourselves a variety of questions. They may include how to begin to prepare and more specifically, what to do in what order.

I Know That…

Some of these questions are personal in nature, while others are directed to professional matters that vary according to your type of practice.

It is important to have clarity about these matters. This will not only provide the foundation of your lifestyle plan, but the answers are essential for preparing your practice properly.

In this article, I address some of those concerns that I know are personally important to you and your spouse.

Your Next Lifestyle: the Big Picture

  • Do you want to stop practicing completely or have a gradual transition?
  • What will you and your spouse do afterwards?
  • How will those activities meet your needs to continue to fulfill your purpose in life?
  • How will you balance that with a generous dose of fun?
  • Is there an opportunity for you to collaborate on a new venture or vocation?
  • Do you have parents or children that have special needs that you attend to?

Living in the Moment: Creature Comforts and Access

  • Where is that place that when you are there, you consistently feel that you are in the “moment”?
  • Is that the same place you live now or somewhere else?
  • Does this place provide you with comfortable weather?
  • What about temperature, humidity and change of seasons?
  • Does this location enable you to remain active most of the year?
  • Are you able to have reasonable access to family, friends, nature and recreation?
  • What about access to services such as outpatient medical care and hospitals?

A second home?

  • Will you continue to live in your existing home?
  • Do you plan to have a vacation home?
  • Will you remain a resident of the state where your primary home is located?
  • Can living in the second house in another state trigger residency status there?
  • Will that create a state income tax liability for you?

Clarity and Conviction

It is useful to think about the words resolution and conviction. Both are attributes that are essential to experience a life born of the dreams you are dreaming today. I believe that conviction supersedes resolution in its benefit to you. It is based on greater clarity of thought and purpose that will better prepare you for the next great phase of your life.

I encourage you to envision what you want with imagination and courage. Then proceed to determine how you will make it happen.
